Charles Howell, III – Young and Restless

By now you have probably heard of Charles Howell, III.  He’s young, he’s determined, and quickly making a name for himself.  But six months ago you might have wondered who he was when you heard his name.  What is Howell all about?

Charles Howell, III is at the top of the FedEx Cup leader board.  He’s a young golfer who will only be 28 this summer.  Hailing from the home of the Masters Tournament, Augusta, GA, Howell grew up in a city that is steeped in golfing tradition.

At the age of seven he began to play golf and won his first Junior League Tournament three years later.  Charles says that kids just don’t play much basketball or football in August, GA.  It’s all about golf and so it has been for him.

We know that he has talent aplenty but there’s another, little known asset that he has as well, determination.  Charles turned pro in 2000.  A year later he was PGA Tour Rookie of the year and was touted as the next up and coming golfer.  With his first important win in 2002, the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill, he looked  destined to become the next great.  But his next triumph was this past February at the Nissan Open.  He beat Phil Mickelson in a thrilling playoff.  What was going on in between those two victories?

With a four and a half year stretch in between wins, more than a few golfers might have become discouraged and quit.  Charles says that he has several key encouragers in his life that have fueled his fire to continue and become the best.  Yes, he obviously has wonderful family and friends to believe in him but we think the credit should go to Howell himself.  He committed himself to continue playing and improving until he reached his goal, which was to qualify for the Masters.  He’s going back home to Augusta this year to do what he set out to do.

Howell calls himself “good friends” with Tiger and even though people are becoming excited that he might be able to give Tiger a run for his money some day, it’s still far too early to tell.  For now, our hat is off to him for being dedicated to a game that can drive you crazy and to making his dreams come true.  We’re excited to watch this young, restless golfer determinedly set goals, meet them, and then set new ones.  We will be looking out for Charles Howell, III as he becomes a force to be reckoned with on the course.
