What drives Vijay Singh?

Vijay Singh is an accomplished professional golfer.  At 43 years old and with 47 million dollars as his official cumulative earnings, that would be enough to satisfy most people but Vijay is not someone who is ever going to be “satisfied” in my opinion. He constantly is hitting his golf clubs, is constantly working out and practicing to find his best golf game and the next championship.

Perhaps it is his childhood lessons of perseverance that fuel him to carry on.  Vijay’s watchword is “focus.”  He is very focused on the game of golf and his goals. He has also learned how to still his mind and settle down. And in professional golf, it’s not just about hitting the golf ball well.  The pressures can be tremendous.   Many of the young players surrounding him could learn a lesson or two from Vijay.

There is a lot of talk surrounding Tiger Woods at the moment.

Will he will be able to put the circumstances of his life to the side and carry on or will he fade into an early (although accomplished) retirement?  Tiger’s had a lot of life situations that have seemed to upset his apple cart lately including his marriage and his father’s recent death.  Vijay says things like that don’t matter.  He says he has learned to slow down his breathing, hear the water and the wind, and focus.  There is that word again.  His focus just might propel him to the top of the golfing pack to replace Tiger.

Even with his success, there have been some bad times for Vijay, specifically during the firestorm of criticism he brought on himself by his scathing comments regarding Annika Sorenstam in 2003. But Vijay seems to have put all of that behind him and is insistent upon going all the way.  His image also appears to have recovered somewhat and it appears that he will keep on driving himself as hard as he has in the past.
