Tiger Woods- 2006
British Open Champion
Five strokes. The largest margin of victory in any
major golf tournament since Woods won by 8 at St.
Andrews 5 years ago. Woods took the lead on the 9th
hole of the first round and kept it the entire
tournament.
Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal both came
within one, but soon fell back.

Even when they were so close, everyone seemed to
know that Woods’ win was inevitable. He seemed to be
playing flawless golf. Barring one slip on the 13th
hole, Woods’s play was mistake free. His golf clubs
seemed like magic wands.
People have continued to question him for changing
his golf swing. "I've been criticized for the last
couple of years. 'Why would I change my game?' This
is why," Woods said. "First, second and first in the
last three majors. That's why." |
Woods and Jack Nicklaus are the only American
golfers to win the Open twice at St. Andrews, the
home of golf. And although this achievement is a
difficult one, its not the one Woods has eye on.
That one is Nicklaus’ 18 Majors. Woods has 10 and is
only 29. Nicklaus was 32 when he got his 10th.
Woods is well on his way to catching this seeming
unreachable record. "He has 10 of these majors now,
and we all know Jack had 18," Colin Montgomerie
said. "He's over halfway now. It's amazing. Can he
achieve the impossible? He's on his way."
Monty finished second with a 279 and Olazabal tied
for third with Fred Couples with a score of 280.
Montgomerie didn’t feel bad for his loss saying,
"There is no disgrace finishing second to the best
player in the world." People seemed to think Tiger
was slowly fading, but this win just seems to say,
"I’m back."
